'm a marshland fancier, but I can enjoy the settled scenery of summer cottages on sea islands, too, especially from a comfortable kayak.
The coast of Connecticut proves to be a most pleasant place for family kayaking. We joined Chris Hauge, who runs Stony Creek Kayak Tours, on a trip that included a wild marshland inhabited by ospreys, herons, and a host of other wildlife. This is all flatwater country, though the adventuresome might find some waves to surf and play in if the wind and tide are just right. Chris Hauge gives tours and instruction for kayak paddlers of all levels. This is a great way to introduce a family to paddling; even if you've never paddled a kayak before, you can make any of his trips. Stony Creek Kayak Tours (327 Leetes Island Rd., Branford, CT 06405; 203-481-6401) will take groups on a half-day easy paddle for $40 a person and a full day outing for $75 a person; an all-day float down the Connecticut River, including lunch, costs $100. A special sunset tour costs $30 each. All prices include the use of a kayak, flotation vest, dry bag, and all necessary equipment. |
