Bretton Woods
Story by Tim Jones

S
ome years ago I took my two then-little boys to Bretton Woods for a birthday treat -- two days of skipping school and three days of skiing. We left early on Sunday morning for the three-hour drive, skied all day Sunday, all day Monday, and all day Tuesday. The weather and the conditions were perfect, and we had an absolute blast.

Bretton Woods is a perfect area for family skiing. While there are a few real expert trails on the mountain, most of the skiing is on wide-open intermediate terrain. The boys and I skied together, constantly exploring new trails. Bretton Woods is a great intermediate mountain, but when we wanted a challenge, we could gravitate to West Glades, Short and Sweet, Sly Fox, or Darby's Dropoff and ski the steeps and bumps until our thighs burned. But we really enjoyed the open, rolling intermediate terain that Bretton Woods is famous for. And if my just-learning-to-ski wife had been along, she'd have found plenty of easy terrain she could handle.

Bretton Woods is small, family owned and family oriented. I can't imagine a better setting for skiers who like lots of wide-open cruising terrain.
