Gunstock
Story by Tim Jones

I
've only visited Gunstock once. It was a beautiful Friday in March and I had the mountain virtually to myself. What a great way to spend a sunny day late in the winter!

In its advertisements, Gunstock boasts about its grooming. From what I saw, they have good reason to boast. I wasn't expecting much, since a hard freeze had followed a warm rain a few days prior to this expedition, and the conditions at most areas were nothing to brag about. On this day, however, at Gunstock the snow had been groomed and groomed and groomed again to as close to perfection as you can get without some help from Mother Nature.

Gunstock is really a beginner/intermediate area. The trails are wide and smooth with only a few steep pitches. Unfortunately, the only two serious black-diamond runs on the mountain were closed. But a couple of the black-diamond runs (really just hard intermediate) were enough for a day of fun.

From what I hear, Gunstock can get pretty crowded on weekends. But midweek, if you're looking for good snow, a friendly midsized area, reasonable ticket prices ($28 midweek, $39 weekends/holidays this season) and a beautiful view of Lake Winnepesaukee, Gunstock delivers.

For more information, see Gunstock's Web site at www.gunstock.com, or call (603) 293-4341.
